Volleyball Drill Name - Butterfly (for passers)
Goal - Give passing opportunities to athletes in a warmup setting.
How to play - On each side of the net, there is a passing line, a target, and a tossing line. The drill begins with a player (or coach) in the tossing line tossing a ball to the first player in the passing line on the opposite side of the court. That player passes the ball to the target player standing where a setter would set from. After a player passes, she becomes the next target. After a target player catches a pass, she takes that ball to the back of the tossing line and awaits her turn to toss the ball to the passer. After a player tosses, she moves to the other side of the court to the back of the passing line. Players rotate in this sequence for a set amount of time.
How to keep score - This is a warmup activity without a scoreboard. However, if this activity is happening simultaneously on multiple courts, the individual courts can keep track of good passes, with the first court to accomplish a predetermined amount of good passes becoming the winning court.6
Time - This activity should take about 5-10 minutes.
Variations - Instead of the tossing line tossing the ball, the players (or coach) can spike an easy serve to the passers from 10-15 feet behind the net. An even more advanced variation would have the players serving at the passers from the endline.
Benefits - Gives all athletes passing and serving (in the 2nd and 3rd variations) reps.
Emphasis - Passing targets, controlled serving reps (in the 2nd and 3rd variations), and warming up for practice.
