Drill Name: Queen Of The Court
Note - This is the same drill as "king of the court" if you are playing with the guys.
Goal - Fun game-like activity helping young players improve in the most important volleyball skills.
How to play - Create three of four teams, each with three players. Two permanent setters can also participate, equaling a total of 11-14 athletes. Customize the team sizes and permanent positions based on your roster size.
One team starts on the "monarch" side. If you are a girl's team, we call this the "queen" side. If you are a boy's team, we call this the "king" side. Another team is on the opposite side of the monarch side. The remaining teams are waiting off the court behind the non-monarch side.
The non-monarch team serves to the monarch team. If the monarch team wins the rally, it remains the monarch and stays on the monarch side. If the non-monarch team wins the rally, they move to the monarch side of the net and the previous monarch goes to the non-monarch side and awaits a turn to serve.
After each rally, one of the teams waiting behind the non-monarch side serves and attempts to become the new monarch.
How to keep score - Either of the following options works fine: 1st) Teams score when they win any rally. Or 2nd) Teams can only score when they win a rally on the monarch side.
Time - It should take about 20 minutes to play. Play until one team scores a pre-determined amount of points.
Variations - Modify the drill as needed to match your number of athletes. Depending on the level of play, the rallies can be initiated with a coach toss to the monarch side.
Benefits - Very fun, fast-paced game that players love to participate in.
Emphasis - Serving, passing, setting, spiking, and digging.
