Self-Esteem

What I’ve come to greatly appreciate in working with the crew at GMS, is the cadre of coaches in the company and those you get to meet. These relationships have proven critical in my own coaching development.

I was recently sent a Dilbert comic strip by a good friend who coaches at Utah State University – Grayson DuBose. I’ve been trying to tie something together with an article I had read on the “value” of self-esteem.

You can read the summary of the article here.

One thing I have been trying to do more often lately is watch how other coaches coach and act during a match. What I have come to find is that there are a whole lot of coaches out there who talk a whole lot giving general group feedback, which is something that should be used sparingly and used only to enhance self-esteem most of the time. Once those coaches actually have something important to say, the players usually don’t hear it because they’re so used to feedback overload. It’s a skill to know what to say and to say it at a time that it is most meaningful to the players.
